Saint-George in Motion, virtuoso knight : it’s a contemporary recreation of the work of the historic figure of the Guadeloupe-born man-at-arms, master of music, foilist and violinist Joseph Bologne de Saint-George. It combines baroque music, contemporary dance and contemporary fencing in a three-part musical and choreographic opus orchestrated by violinist Romuald Grimbert-Barré and choreographer Johana Malédon.
Oscillating between the duality of codified gestures and improvised movements induced by sometimes incomplete scores, this original creation invites a transhistorical reflection on the singular destiny of an extraordinary man, a slave by birth who became a free and educated man of colour and whose Paris fell under the spell of the Age of Enlightenment and Abolition. He became famous as the Chevalier de Saint-George, and it is his portrait, as much as that of the city that helped shape him, that is presented here.
